This seminar offers an advanced exploration of St. Ignatius of Loyola and his most famous text, the Spiritual Exercises, as well as its place in the life of the Society of Jesus and its works. In addition to discussing the genesis and history of the Exercises, it also invites students to consider some ways that the Ignatian vision has been “incarnated” in history, beginning with Ignatius and continuing to the present day.
This seminar introduced students to a selection of spiritual practices and approaches to prayer in the Christian tradition, and to the theological reflection in which they are grounded. An important objective of the class was to gain knowledge about Christian spiritual traditions, and this was accomplished through the study of selected sources and class conversation. A second objective, equally important, was to engage those traditions at the level of personal practice and reflection.

From the religious conversion of Saint Ignatius Loyola in early modern Spain to the state of the Jesuit order in contemporary America, this course endeavors to clarify and interpret the intellectual, spiritual, and pedagogical vision of Ignatius and his followers. The survey includes an introduction to the Spiritual Exercises; a study of the evolution of the Society’s structure and mission from the first Jesuits to today.
Presuming no background in Christianity, this course presented a basic introduction to its sources, some of its most important themes, and questions of contemporary importance.
